Any know if AIU is reputable for an online degree?
Question:
Is this place reputable? Im wanting an online degree in Visual Communications and Graphic Arts. Its just almost impossible to find information on a school without them throwing the sales pitch at you. I just want to compare schools and my options.
Any suggestions?
Answer:
According to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) website, AIU is accredited but on probation. Probation is the highest punishment SACS will give other than denying accreditation. AIU was placed on probation in December 2005. By December 2006, AIU was still found to be in non-compliance and their probation was extended one year. Two years is the maximum amount of time SACS will allow a school to remain on probation. If AIU does not fix the very serious non-compliance issues, they will lose accreditation in December 2007. At that point, a degree from AIU will be useless. I highly recommend that all current students transfer schools immediately. I also recommend that prospective students consider other schools before AIU.

If it is at all possible, get your degree at a REAL University or technical institute. I can guarantee you that prospective employers do NOT place high value on the online universities which are going to cost you just as much.
It is really a false economy.
AIU is currently unaccredited. Its accreditation has been revoked, which is almost impossible to "accomplish."
Because of this, AIU courses will not transfer to any reputable universities, and AIU degrees are nearly worthless.
ANY so-called "college" that uses a hard-sell technique (as AIU does) is not a reputable school.
Find a real brick-and-mortar school that has distance education courses. University of Maryland and Penn State come to mind as very popular choices, but check out your own state university first.
For confirmation of this perspective on AIU, see the website below.
Best wishes to you.
my sister is taking classes with AIU online...so far so good and they help her get financial aid...they also are helping her get her degree plan...and they did called the house looking for her but to give her information of the school..and it looks like she likes it she already turn 4 assingments with grades of 94 in all of them...so she is happy..just try..
American Intercontinental University http://www.aiuonline.edu is in fact accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
This school is unaccredited. Dont waste your time or money. University of Phoenix is another example.
AIU is an accredited university, you can verify it through the Department of Education here:

There are better options out there for online courses.
I would regard online universities as the absolute last resort for someone seeking higher education.
The quality of education these programs offer is minimal - there is simply no substitute for the kind of dynamic interactions and discussions that commonly occur in face-to-face college courses. Also, the quality of educator is significantly less at online universities - the best faculty choose to teach at real colleges and universities. Both the pay and work environments are far superior to online universities. So, for great classes from great instructors, go to a real college or university.
Also, because of the minimal training they offer, employers and graduate institutions place little value in degrees earned from online programs. Many of these programs lack even basic accreditation for the degree programs they offer.
Bottom line - you will receive little if any personal or professional benefit from online universities relative to what you could have received from a real college or university.
I have one word of advice.
My experience if you are going for an online course, stick with the "Ivy League" of online universities the one's that have a good reputation and that are ACCREDITED!
Check out http://tinyurl.com/222c73 for a listing of the top online schools. Get info first, read about the courses carefully, THEN make a decision. Good luck!!
