Teachers..interdiscipl... units...?

Question:
I am a grad student in an elem ed program, i am not really familiar with what types of units are appropriate.i was thinking about doing a unit on service dogs for 1st grade...? I don't know if its relevant or appropriate, but i thought it would be interesting, great to tie in literature and multicultural ed...

What do you think? Would that be a social studies topic...?

My advisor said she would like to see me do something "simple" (i planned a unit with some other students that was based around the holocaust and the book: number the stars 5th gr., which was a great unit, but now my advisor would like me to do something more simple for this project...

Answer:
A unit on service dogs is definitely appropriate and would be considered a social studies topic. I don't know if I would necessarily consider it 100% relevant. Are you just planning this, not teaching? I would also be concerned that the topic isn't quite broad enough.
I think the kids would be fascinated by a unit on service dogs. In grade 1 we teach about community helpers so it could easily fit in with that.
