check with your insurance, they[some] cover an area of about 30 miles into mexico at least ours do. Or you can just purchase insurance for a trip to cover certain miles into the interior of mexico
you need an insurance from mexico.
You can probably get some information from your insurance company.
They usually have Mexican and US insurance, actually Mexican insurance in most cases is not accepted in the US, when you rent a car in the Mexican border, they always ask you if you want the "American Insurance"
