Do I need to get new auto insurance?
Question:
Answer:
First you need to call your insurance company to determine if they will still be able to cover you in your new state. If they will, then great leave insurance as is.
However your current rate was based on many factors, that no longer apply, such as area in which you live (may increase or decrease insurance rates due to high crime, vandilism rates ect.), so if they can still cover you, your insurance rate will change regardless. You may have to raise you minimum liability coverage, as every state has different law enforced minimums, which could aso impact your rate.
If the insurance company will not cover you, you will have to cancel your current policy. This may also cost you, as some companies have cancelation fees, so they will return some of your prepaid money, but may keep a month or two of payments as a cancelation penalty.
Carll your existing carrier.Find out. Don't be sorry.
If you move into the state they don't service, you will have to get a new policy from a company authorized to serve your new state, then close your old policy and get a refund for any unused portion of the policy. Ask if they can cover you in (insert state name here) __________.
It will still be in effect but you should switch carriers ASAP.
Call your carrier and let them know that you moved to another state. Very simple
