How to get off an auto insurance policy?

Question:
about 2 years ago, my mom signed me up in the same insurance as her car...i do not drive her car and never did, however, we still pay 80 bucks extra a month, i want to get off of that insurance but i hear its much trickier than it seems. The car i drive is already insured, but not under my name. Is that legal or not? I live in illinois if that helps. how should i go about removiving my name from this insurance company?

Answer:
To get off you mom's insurance you have to prove to them you have insurance elsewhere or have moved out of her household. You need to be a listed driver on the car you drive. Get yourself added ASAP. Once you do that, simply send a copy of the insurance on the car you drive to her insurance company make sure you show as a driver. They may want the policy you are on to have matching liability limits to your mother's policy. She can ask her insurance agent to be sure on that.
It is the person who owns and pays for the policy who is responsible for what is covered and keeping it current.
If your current car is damaged, the person in whose name it is, gets the money, not you.
You must have liability insurance. If your mother drops you, you must get your own policy.
Your mom will be required to by her insurance company to add any licensed driver on her auto insurance policy, living with her. You do need to get the car you drive added to your own insurance. This will keep the car insured at all times. The person who is currently insuring the car, may not inform you when or if the car insurance gets dropped.
