Why are auto repairs estimates different when asked for persoanl pay vs. insurance pay?

Question:
I always seem to get asked "if this will be personal pay or insurance pay"? I asked what's the difference? they never seem to have an answer for me. What's up?

Thank you

Answer:
Because if its insurance, many insurance companies have negotiated a lower fee with the shop than you will be able to get personally. If they go over that negotiated amount, then the insurance may not have them on their "preferred" list anymore. They dont care about screwing you, though.
It's the labor rate. Many body shops have a pre-negotiated lower labor rate with certain insurance companies - much like managed health care has pre-negotiated payments for specific services.
For once I agree with the others..
Different body shops have different negotiated rates. What you may wan to do is explain to them that you would much rather get your car fixed at their body shop, but other cost less, and ask them to look into dropping the rate in order to earn your business. Negotiate! Thats what claims adjusters do!
