Car Insurance Claim?

Question:
My S Reg Skoda Felicia was vandalised and all the windows smashed. Been in garage over a week, now been told it is a write off because they cannot get the windows to fit? I paid 5000.00 for this car 5 years ago, now told they will only give me 800.00 which is the average price for the same car in local Auto Trader. Garage told me that the windows can be replaced but would have to be specially made. In other words, the repair to fix would cost more than the value of the car. Has anybody else had similar problems with their car insurance?? I seem to think that if you buy a car, do not buy a cheap one as they will not repair it if damaged. (oh, and they will take my 200.00 excess from the 800.00 too) cheek of it...

Answer:
itis the responsibilty of the insurer to return the car to you in the same condition it was prior to the damage,,an accidental write off is a different matter,,you seem to have damage only,,,therefore if they need to get the windows custom made it is down to them to do so,,a car is never a write off until you the owner sign a paper to say you accept that it is a write off,
if you do,,they will only pay you the market value, current,of a car in very poor condition..
in other words you get next to nothing and dont forget to make sure you do not finish up paying the excess.
i hope you have reported this to the police as it is also criminal damage,,this helps your claim with the ins.company
Always turn down their first offer and tell them it's not acceptable. You can nearly always get more out of them.
it's a popular choice of vehicle.

Have you tried the local scrap yards to see if you can get the required parts from them...
oh, poor you...how awful to have your car ruined by some mindless idiot! you can argue it with the insurers & they might offer a bit more - but thats what they do..give you the 'book' price. only other alternative is to repair it yourself..& it doesnt sound viable if the windows are costing more than the car is worth. sounds like you are stuck between a rock & a hard place - good luck!
Two good answers to start with above.

For £800 return (-£200 excess).. I'd consider not even claiming.. and just check the scrappies and ebay for lowest price replacements for the parts.

Also I'd be careful about what your gonna do with either that repaired car, or a replacement car, as it sounds that where you park isn't that safe. I hope it didn't actually happen at your home premise (the vandalisation).
Personnally, if the insurance company were really serious about writing off the car I'd see about sourcing the windows myself. There are bound to be some in scrap yards around your area.

Some insurance companies will write off a car, send you a cheque and allow you to purchase the car back off them for a minimal amount. So, you find the parts, get a cheque for £600+ from the insurance company and keep the car.
Thinking outside the box have you contacted your homeowner's insurance since it was vandalized in the garage? Sometimes they'll pay too.

You can tell them it's not acceptable & if they refuse to budge change insurance. I did that after I accidently rubbed up against a tail end of a car parked outside the lines. Owners claimed it took $850. to fix it and my insurance pd. w/o questioning the amount. Then raised my insurance by $30. a month & this was Progressive. I went shopping for new insurance on the web & found one that cost me over $20. less than I was paying at Progressive even before the accident.

So though it still ticks me off I look at it this way. If not getting ripped off once I might be paying that amt. many times over by not changing. I use Safeco now & love it. Every year there's no accident my insurance goes down. I don't know anyone else that does that, especially on just basic liability.
No doubt the easiest way to get insurance quotes is on the web.
Why would you waste your time on the phone calling around?
the last time i needed quotes on insurance i used one of these comparison sites and it was great.
this is the site i used and it was quick like less than 5 mins.
The last thing I want to do is listen to elevator music while waiting for a salesman.
Anyway I got good quotes and ended up saving money so I was happy.
So shop around and compare quotes which is easy on the net.
Good starting point is at this site.

Good luck.
OK, say you ran over some dope's bicycle one day and offered to pay for it because you are a decent person. The bike owner tells you it's only worth $20.00.He then tells you he made a very bad deal on it last year and paid $500.00 for the bike and he is demanding this amount. Would YOU pay him 500 bucks for a bike only worth 20?
I thought not. A car, like anything else, is only worth what it's worth and you cannot expect anyone, including insurance companies, to pay more that the market value. Your deductible amount is always 'deducted' from the settlement amount.
