Insurance Policy number formats?

Question:
Hello, I'm looking for a website or other resource that lists the formatting of auto insurance policy numbers. I was in an accident and my ins. agent has the guy's insurance # but not a related company name. I'd like to find out who the guy is insured with.

Answer:
There isn't such a database (I wish there was!) I recommend that you post the policy number format, numbers and letters, here on the boards. There's quite a few of us insurance folks who hang out here and one of us might recognize it. Make sure you give the state, too, and if you think it's personal or commercial.

Did your agent get the NAIC number instead of the name, by any chance?
No such database. Even my own insurance company (USAA) has different format policy numbers depending on who actually writes the policy.
I have worked for a ins. co. and I find it hard to believe that your agent can't find the other drivers ins. co because the policy number are all letters and numbers that give you the info, your agaent is bs'in you.
