I'm about 2 buy my first car, do I need auto insurance before I buy the car or can I wait until after I buy?
Question:
Answer:
If you are buying the the car from a dealership, they will expect you to have insurance and prove it in order for you to drive off the lot, especially if you are financing the vehicle. You can call one of the companies that sell directly (like Progressive) even from the dealership and be on the road in 15 minutes or less.
You can buy a car first then buy insurance later. But make sure when you are operating a vehicle you must have insurance, otherwise it's illegal.
Make sure you do some research about ownership transfer, and car's backgroud.
You can go ahead and buy the car without having auto insurance for it. The dealer doesn't expect you to have auto insurance for a car that you're checking out. Now in many states though, you'll need to have car insurance if you want to get your vehicle registration. But just to buy the car- nope.
I know they will not let you leave the lot with a car if you don't have insurance. I had to get insurance on my first car i ever bought before i left the lot and my second car I had my insurace transferred to my new car while at the dealership, my dealer actually did most of it for me. I would just wait till you bought the new car, because they will probably do it for you.
Well you really don't need insurance to buy your first car. The insurance company will want to know what is the year make model, vin number, color etc. If you are financing the vehicle you will need insurance 1st before you can drive it off of the lot. But if you have all this information, then i would get insurance 1st before you drove it off the car lot.
