Have full UK driving license (39 years) and want auto insurance for own car in Canada...Can it be done?? TIA?
Question:
Answer:
I am not 100% sure of the answer, but I think it can be done. Do you have an International Driver's License? I think getting it is just a formality. If so, I think you can get the insurance.
Our daughter and son-in-law were here in Canada from the UK visiting and we put them on the insurance for our car while they were here, and our discussions with our insurance company suggested that an international driver's license would take care of it. There is something called a Canadian Non-Resident Interprovince Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card for US drivers in Canada. (Wow!! What a name!!)
If you are buying a car in Canada you may need a Canadian address to register the car.
Also, my husband and I have had our own car in the US, bought it there and had insurance for it in the US. It was called an international insurance policy.
Your best bet is to call a Canadian insurance company and ask the question. Remember that in Canada, car insurance is a provincial matter, so you need to contact a company in the province you intend to live in.
I hope this is of some help.
