Do you have to buy auto insurance before you buy a car?

Question:
i've never bought a car in the uk before and i'm not following the principle very well, i mean, you could arrange insurance first, and then the car you want have already been sold to someone else, at the same time, you don't want to be driving it off the forecourt with no cover. so is the best thing to sort it all out at the garage? will the dealer help me to do this?

Answer:
You normally put a deposit on the car so it wont be sold to anyone else. Then you arrange insurance to start on the day you collect the car and take the cover note to the garage with you to prove its insured - easy xxx
