Need help with Job search?
Question:
It's tough.
Thanks.
Answer:
I assume since you got a MBA, you're interested in some kind of business work. I was always told that the best way to get started out of school is to join a large company.
Many large corporations have management trainee programs that are great ways to get started. By joining a large corporation (doesn't matter what position you start with), you'll get to see the different workings within a business structure. There are many departments, with rules, standards of operations, clear evaluations of your work, etc. etc.. that a small business most likely would not offer. It allows you to be exposed to various part of business, in which hopefully you'll find your true calling. you'll then be able to focus on what you really want to do. A large company will also allow you to move laterally then between departments so you can pursue your true interests.
In fact, there are many management trainee programs that does exactly that, they send you to different departments so you can learn all the workings of the company. you might work in operations for a month, accounting, sales, customer service, whatever, but you'll definitely know at the end what you prefer and perhaps prefer not to do. (BTW, every time you find something you definitely don't want to do, you're also closer to knowing what you DO want to do).
After a couple years at a large company, you'll most likely end up in one of 3 places:
1. found your place in the company
2. don't like the company, but know what you're pretty good at (which is probably also what you'll like to do), and you will then look for a job at another company, large or small. But your resume will look pretty good and you'll be able to get another job easier.
or
3. maybe you'll find you hate working for someone else, or the business world just isn't for you...then you move on on your journey. maybe you'll work for non profit, maybe you'll want to start your own business... but you'll at least eliminate some options.
Hope that helps. Good luck!
