Question about state health insurance, california?

Question:
Lets say you are un employed, and become pregnant. other than a CD at the bank for 20k, you have no money. your needs are taken care of, but you need health insurance in order to see a doctor and delivery of the child. what will medical say if you have that bond? have to cash it out and use it all first? if you lie about it, will they find out? it is an inheritance that i don't want to spend, saving it for a house down payment. my boyfriend has a good job and health insurance for himself. he says his child could be covered on it, but what about me when i am pregnant, and child birth? if they know about the money does that auto matically unqualify me? or just higher co pays? what should i do?

Answer:
The only way your boyfriend's insurance will cover you is of you're married or if you're registered as domestic partners (and the last is iffy. You need to be in a town that recognizes them and have a company that covers them). Once the child is born, it'll cover the child. But only his wife, not his girlfriend or fiancee.

CALIFORNIA DOES NOT HAVE COMMON LAW MARRIAGE!

Medi-Cal is based on income. That CD isn't income. It's an asset, but not part of your monthly income.

Just go apply. Walk into the nearest Planned Parenthood (or other clinic) and say you think you're pregnant. They'll sign you up then and there for Presumptive Eligibility Medi-Cal, and help you with getting the rest of the paperwork in. (They may even have someone in their office who can complete the process, so you don't have to go down to Social Services.)

You can do all this at the clinic, and still go to any OB or midwife who accepts Medi-Cal.

It's easy. It's painless. It should be free, since you don't have much income. (We didn't pay a penny for my first son's pregnancy or birth.)

Oh... and once you have the "proof of pregnancy" from the clinic, go apply for WIC. Who can't use free food, right? Again, it's not about assets, it's about income. (CA's WIC program has plenty of funding -- don't feel guilty about using it!)

Congratulations & good luck! =)
I live in california and I am on medical, in my case i wouldnt mention the bank account or the bond, they really wont look for it and if say they find out about it later the worst they will do is make you pay them back (in little monthly payments) But if they do know about it, it will probably just make the co pay higher like you said :) Its up to you :)
qualification for medical insurance is usually based on your yearly income. since the cd does not count towards that, the state has no reason to know about it or count it towards your income level. They may ask you about any living expenses you have, such as rent, food, and fuel for a car, but that would be the extent. I live with my boyfriend and we use both of our incomes to provide for our rent and everything else, but I was able to get state medical insurance based only on my yearly income since we are not married and they never even asked me about any savings or bonds that I might have. I would definitely check into it. Just be sure that which every ob you go to, will accept the state ins.
How long have you and your boyfriend been together. In the state of California, if you have been together for a long while (I think it is 6 years) he can put you on his insurance as a common law spouse.

Also, I do not think hospitals can go after things like stocks and bond as they take to long to cash out.

One thing you might want to do is call around and ask which hospitals take patients with no insurance. Also, look into the California First 5 program, as it can also help you with yourself and your upcoming baby.
where i stay medicaid doesn't look at your bank account they just look at how much money you make a year so they probably won't even ask about it
for medi-cal go down to your local health and human services center (welfare building). the have workers there who will sit down with you and go over the paperwork. they'll want your birth cert, social security card, utility bill, any pay stubs, and a confirmation on the pregnancy. not sure if i missed anything. there also is share of cost medi-cal but from what my worker told me it would be cheaper to go with healthy families if you do not qualify for no cost medi-cal.

if you don't qualify there is healthy families(in their application booklet they accept pregnant woman for insurance but for some reason i can't find anything about that on the website). then theres a.i.m. for mid-income women.
