If an auto insurance company has approved an auto body company to fix a car.?

Question:
Is it safe to say that they have not totaled the vehicle? Does the insurance company pay for auto body work in advance or after? I ask this because I'm paying out of pocket for the damage and called the auto body service and they gave me an estimate and had already ordered the parts. Yet it was still an estimate? I called the owner of the vehicle and they had said it would take 18
days to fix.

Answer:
They didn't total the car.
However, once the body shop starts doing work, if the mechanics find additional repairs that need to be done and they call the insurance company for a supplemental estimate, the insurance company can then total out the car.

You should have been given a copy of the estimate. Let the Body Shop know that if any additional repairs are needed, you would like to know. If they then total out the car at that time, the insurance company will let you know what steps you can take.
They approved a body shop and the body shop gives an estimate

(a) if the estimate is more than what the car is worth - the insurance will total it and write you a check

(b) otherwise, the insurance company would fix it.
