I was stopped by the police and didn't have auto insurance. Should I get a lawyer?

Question:
I live in De. First offense is a 1500 dollar fine and 6 month suspended license.

Answer:
Some people here have been giving you pretty ignorant advice. You must get insurance. Show it to the court, but it is only proof you are no longer driving without insurance, it will not make anybody think you had it at the time of the offence. It may show you are taking responsibility and mitigate the fine and/or suspension. Do not get insurance and cancel it after, as one person said, or I will come down there and smuck you upside the head, just as he should be. People who drive without insurance deliberately and continuously show a complete disregard and lack of respect for the lives and property of others, and have no business on the road.
I think you might want to talk with a lawyer, but unless you have a defense, it sounds like bad news.
pay the fine...not a lawyer
dont bother wasting the money, you would loose the case anyway. the only option you have hi hoping the officer doesnt show up on the court date.
No, get insurance & present the ID card to the place were you pay the fine.
there wouldnt be much of a point, theres nothin a lawyer could say that, wouyld make it seem like you actually did have auto insuarance, they would just act like they were doin you some big favor, when they werent, it would be a total waste of money
What exactly would you be getting a lawyer for? You didn't have insurance. Plain and simple. If you were at fault for getting pulled over and in your state you have an insurance rule, then you should face te consequences
No get insurance today and show proff of it at the court - should be dissmissed
Auto insurance is less expensive than a lawyer. Hell, the fine may be less than a lawyer. But check around your town.
No No No, Get a brain then get insurance. I don't know anyone stupid enough to drive with no insurance. You certainly are in a class of your own.
1. Get some Auto Insurance = IMMEDIATELY

2. When you go to court, show the Judge that you got the Insurance = IMMEDIATELY

3. Plead GUILTY, and then say, "Your Honor, I plead Guilty and though myself On the MERCY of the Court! This is my first offense!

Thanks, RR
Sounds like you will have to bite the bullet! I find it unlikely that getting a lawyer will soften the blow. Extenuating circumstances may reduce your fine and suspension period.
Always get a lawyer... always!
pay the fine. a lawyer would be a waste of time.
Holy hell $1,500 fine for no insurance. Where I live its like $300 to $500 for that. But im in the same boat as you I can't afford the car insurance too if it was affordable I would have it.. But I have been driving for 5 years now and I have never been pull over. But you are better off paying the fine since a Lawyer would be a waste of time and more money then what the fine is. Or do what people normally do get the insurance for 1 month right now and then take the proof to the court house and they will usually drop the fine. I would just say you didn't have the insurance Card on you but here it is.
The lawyer may help you get a lesser pennality through a plea bargain.

Pay the fine, get the insurance. Learn from your mistake.
I think if you get insurance and show proof when you go to court they might dismiss the case.
yes you better a lawyer. You may end up paying the fine but saved from 6 month suspension.

any way...You will have a defense from the charges of "the peoples" public prosecutor.
without defense they will reap You in pieces.
It sounds like the FIRST thing you need to to is get insurance unless you are now walking or taking a bus.

If the first offense is that bad imagine what they will do to you if you get stopped while still waiting to go to court on the FIRST ticket.

Having purchased your insurance for your protection and the other guys peace of mind.. NOW go see a lawyer to find out what your options are if any.

Good luck.. and it sounds like you are going to have a $1500 lesson.. I hope you can learn something from it.. it would be a shame to waste all of that money on nothing.
