You can check your own credit by putting a 'soft' inquiry in...doesn't affect it negatively.
yes it can lower your score. it depends on how many inquiries you get over a period of time. go direct to the credit reporting agencies to get your score. once every 12 months is allowed without affecting your score.

Go to www.annualcreditreport.com You are entitled to one free credit report per year that can be accessed at this site. It will not hurt your cresit because it is not an inquiry originated by a lender. If you want another credit report within the 1 year time frame, you'll have to pay for it. At this site, you can dispute incorrect information on the report directly with the credit bureau. I have used this site and it is very secure and trustworthy, and it takes you directly to the three credit reporting bureaus. It takes a little time, but it's worth it.
Rather than get your credit score from a lender, you can get it from the folks who have the scores in hand with no penalty.
Head over to Experian ( http://www.experian.com ), Equifax ( http://www.equifax.com ) and Transunion ( http://www.transunion.com ) to get your reports.
Protect your good credit. Lenders who keep chipping at your credit reports make the reporting agencies nervous, and they tend to lower your score as the inquiries build up.
every time your credit is checked doesn't matter by who, it will go down a couple of points
I agree with Stewart
If you use a site like eloans, through an organization that extends credit, the credit reporting agencies will interpret the request as a credit check for a loan application. Having applications for credit outstanding lowers your score as there is a chance that your total indebtedness will suddenly increase.
