A problem with filing Tax returns?

Question:
I got my W-2 form for the last year in April - I filled out the other relevant forms and mailed all documentation to the IRS in time. However, three months back I got a letter from IRS saying that they had a problem with processing my documents, because my name was misprinted on my SSN card. As I had been out of town on vacation, I did not see the letter until recently. What should I do now? I don't owe them any money, but will I still get into trouble?

Answer:
No, you won't get in trouble for this. But you need to contact the IRS as soon as possible, and also the social security office to get the spelling of your name corrected in their records.
How was your name misprinted on your SS card? Does social security have the wrong spelling, or did the name on the docs that you filed with the IRS not match the name that ties in with the SS#?

Either way, it would be a good idea to contact the IRS or the Soc Sec Dept. (Whichever has the incorrect info). You have next year's filing time coming up soon. If you correct things now, you won't have this happen again next year. (And it WILL)

Continue to ignore it and it will not go away on it's own. Some computer will tire of your insolence and report you to a human.

I don't think public flogging is in order, but they could make it difficult to collect any refunds due you if your name and SS#'s don't match year after year.
If you don't owe any money, you have nothing to worry about. But, what you do have to do is visit your local Social Security office and see how they can help you fix the problem with your SS card. Once that is done, you can file last years return this year.
