The big time public school haters?

Question:
Why do people who are really agents public schools think that all public schoolers have sex, use drugs, are not as educated, don't know how to act around others other then their own age, don't respect adults, have no life outside the school, etc...

Sure some do (just like some home schoolers), but most DO NOT!
Most kids who are public schooled are great kids, and yes, most home schoolers are great kids also.

Now if you really think about it, if supposedly "all" public schoolers have sex why don't you see almost all the girls in the country pregnant? And if none of them get an "education" then why is it that there are so many people enrolled in college and getting degrees?
And if they don't know how to act around others other then their own age, how do they communicate with others?

Are you getting my point?

Answer:
Sadly, I have to agree with you on some points. As a former teacher in a private high school, I have heard much "public school bashing" by my fellow teachers and parents who advocate private religious schools or homeschooling. I never understood their prejudice towards public education because there are MANY excellent schools out there. Yet, on the other hand, public middle/high school students and educators are exposed to many more dangers and ills of society. Regardless of what type of school you attend, people are people no matter where you go. We all have our hills and valleys to overcome.
It's easy to make generalizations.

These kinds of questions are all highly dependent on each person's individual situation. So, most people generalize.

I mean, I went to public school and I'm a big supporter of it. However, I explain that's because the public school district I was in was good. If I lived 15 miles to the West, I'd likely wish I was in a private school (if there was a good one around there) or be home schooled.
I never heard those accusations made towards public school people. I went to a public school with over 1,000 people and I think 3 of the girls were pregnant...big deal.
i go to a public school and of 3000 kids, lets say half are girls...none of them are pregnant.....some of them are bad, but they would never have sex (at least i dont think they do)
You are not going to want to hear this...but since you asked...here goes.

I know why too many kids that can not tell time on a clock unless it's a digital. They don't know how to make change, and they don't know how to pronounce the name of the street that runs right in front of the school they have been attending for 4 years!
They never want to do community service unless they are forced to. I have seen way too many on here wanting to know how to get around the 'blocking' of myspace at school! Many do not know how to tie shoes laces. Not saying anything about never learning to cook and clean and function in the real world. I see way too many kids on here asking sexual questions when they haven't even reached puberty yet!
Oh, and pregnant girls? What about the daycare centers that are in the schools?

It is so scary how many kids are so ignorant. It is up to them to run the world some day..and this is what we have to rely on? Heaven help us! I just hope it falls on the few good kids who have learned better.
Well, for starters, you used the word "agents" where you should have used "against".

It's other THAN, not other THEN. than is a comparative term, THEN denotes time or consequence.

You're not doing much in the PR department for the academic rigor of the public school system.

I've not seen a single post from a home school supporter claiming that ALL, or even most, public school kids are illiterate, disrespectful, on drugs, or teen parents.
I think that's because they don't live and study in the same environment. If they got chances to exchange schools or houses, they could now what the truth is.

The only way to change their opinions is take them to the public school, they themselves will realize the truth!
I am homeschooled and far beyond my acedemic levels.
This question is quite obsurd. I know a-many homeschooled families (over 300), and none of the girls are pregnant, none of the kids are behind in their grades, most of the kids I know can are even going to college and their only 15-17!
Homeschooled kids are watched carefully by their paretns. My mother eyes me like a hawk when I'm around my boyfriend and I know better than to have sex with him even if my hormones do. A lot of homeschoolers have no idea where to get harsh drugs other than headache medicine and asprin. Few know how to make drugs out of those medicines, and only few a stupid enough to make drug and get high, they know better. I'm not saying that public schooled kids are stupid like that, they are not, some of my good friends are public schooled and they're in the master classes. But, they are wild, and rarely speak to even their own paretns because parents are "uncool" or something Don't ask me, i haven't been in school for 9 years.

Finally.. answering the question (sorry to change the subject in the paragraph before), It's because many people live in a poor part of town where the teachers are paid to baby-sit and the students don't want to learn. Yes, there are some that do, and that's awesome! But, the majority of them do not. Some students (which, in the whole country, is a lot) press hard and earn degrees. Nobody is saying that pubicly-schooled kids are bad, they are good kids, but when there's one bad kid, the badness spreads like butter. Most girls don't want to be pregnant, but they end up that way by accident. Some kids take drugs because their are depressed.
I know my answer is long, but those are all my thoughts on it.
Whether people say bad things about public school is their opinion, nobody ever said it was fact.
Me hopes me helped =)
Sydney, for the same reason that people who hate homeschoolers think that all, or most, homeschoolers are lacking in academic or social skills, isolated from the world and kept in a little bubble.

So, the reason: Because they are human beings.
I've never seen anyone, on this list or any other online service, say that *all* public schoolers have sex, use drugs, etc. You've taken an argument that some people use, ie that public schoolers are *more* likely to do those things, and applied a course of extremism that people have said ALL ps'ers do this. No one has said ALL ps'ers do this, or that. If you have seen it, please post a link, so I'll believe it. I do agree with you, that when it is said that ps'ers are more likely to do those things, it's kind of a ridiculous argument, when you look at whole numbers of children, vs percentages.

I am against public school for our family. Quite frankly I don't care what anyone else does with their family as long as it doesn't intrude into our rights for freedom and the pursuit of happiness.

To continue the argument, why do SOME proponents of public school say that ALL homeschoolers lack social skills? Regardless of knowing even a small majority of the million homeschoolers in the US alone, they've managed to extrapolate that information. It's amazing, isn't it?

Some people will take their example to the extreme to try and sway opinion through emotion. Are you getting *my* point?
People who are opposed to public schools do not believe that all public schoolers are on drugs, having sex, or lack an education.

However, when compared with students in private school and home school, a dispraportionate amount of public school students do drugs, have sex, and have lower standardized test scores on average than their home educated peers.

Most homeschoolers are not opposed to public schools, but have made the choice to use an alternative form of education.

Those who are opposed to public schools take that position more often for reasons related to freedom and civil rights as well as the failure of public schools to fulfill their original purpose.

I hope this clears things up for you.

Ok here is the thing...I am not a public school hater but there are some facts that have made me sure I will continue to homeschool. Here are some scary statistics...

750,000 girls age 15 to 19 become pregnant each year. The US has the highest rate of teen pregnancy of ANY industrialized nation in the world. Almost 30% of girls between the ages of 15 and 20 become pregnant AT LEAST ONCE. 8 out of 10 are unplanned and unwanted. And if you are interested there is a lot of other information out there. http://www.teenpregnancy.org/resources/d...
And last year 1 in 4 teens contracted an STD
http://www.ashastd.org/learn/learn_stati...

Now alcohol and drugs... In a study done in 2003 30% of 8th graders admitted to using illegal drugs, 10th grade was 45% and by 12th it was 53% and those are just the ones who admitted it. Of those questioned 50% admitted to drinking alcohol in the last 30 days and 32% had been drunk at least once.

As for the rest of the educational and behavioral things you mentioned, there are no statistics. But I know that my child will benefit from my guidence better than that of a total stranger. I can teach life skills and values that no teacher everv could. If I can homeschool my child and it works for us, great. If your parents can't or it doesn't work for your family, that is ok too. It is just all about choice.
You're trying to counter one extremist argument with another and you're not helping anyone, including yourself.

I kind of agree with you but you can't judge millions of people based off of a few idiots.
Surely your argument is a poor one. As for me, I agree that not all youth are bad and are guilty of the things you listed.

Yet, I think most youth in public school don't respect adults. I believe this is true mainly because of the poor respect they get from some adults.

I think a lot “Have no life outside the school” I think this because there is not much of anything else in my area, so other places may be different.

The majority of public school students “are not as educated…” are so because they have no interest to be so.

I am an anti-public-school person to a some-what high degree, yet I don’t generalize like you are accusing.

You shouldn’t generalize the way you did. Those who do generalize usually form a poor argument.

I also think you should try to make your point better by showing you academic skill in your writing.
i go to a private school. so idk. but i never knew people thought about public schoolers like that. the schools are just the same. i think.
