I want to go to college but my parents refuse to be involved in anything at all. What do I do?

Question:
I'm an 18 year old student about to graduate from high school and I wish to go on to college to study Aerospace engineering (not many schools offer this program). I finally found a school near me that has it for 11,500 a year. Only problem is that my parents had a bad run in with the IRS and they refuse to fill out any information or sign any papers whatsoever. I'm not an independent because I have a part time job and live with my parents. Is there any way at all that I can go to college without any signatures or anything involving them? It would be a shame if I couldn't go. Please help!

Answer:
problem is, most things require your parents info/signing etc. since you live with them.

can you move in with anyone else? your so bright, its a shame if you dont get your schooling. please dont give up!! its your ticket to a better life, a good life.

ok, try this. try scholarships. most have 1-2 page application and most require an essay.

loans will need co signers (your parents) and anything the government provides will require parents info too.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more... they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

heres a link with a HUGE amount of some available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.

You are 18, you can do anything you want.
You can not get grant money without your parents tax information. You can however get loans or scholarships. How frustrated you must feel!
You are 18, right? You don't need their signature on anything if you're 18 because you're an adult.
My old boss in a financial aid office used to joke 'if your parents don't want to support you, why should I?'

Okay, it's harsh, but a reality in the world of aid. You are clearly dependent, so if you want to do ANYTHING in the need based aid world, you will need to provide their information. In fact, you will most likely not even qualify for a private loan without them co-signing.

Can you afford to attend part time, or perhaps attend a community college?
Attend a community college for the first year. My husband and I are both engineers and he is an aerospace engineer. You will still be required to take a few basic courses and a community college is a great and cheap place to do it. Just check with the college you want to ulimately attend that all your credits will transfer. Take thing like english, calculus, history at the community college. Check the program requirements and try to take all the elective type courses. This will save you lots of time and money once you transfer. After that, find some roommates and move out. If you no longer live with your parents, you are not dependent. After a year you will be independent and won't need any of their information. As a bonus, (if you see it that way), you won't make any money on your own at first, so you'll qualify for all the need based aid. It won't seem that great when you're in your small apartment with 3 roommates, but it will be worth it down the road. Good luck with everything.
Get the scholarships from your job, your parents' works, your school and your home state, and grants like PELL Grants and/or SEOG.
I think the only way around this is to get yourself declared independent or emancipated. You may have to move out and get a part time job for a year to establsh yourself as independent.

Fill out what you can of the FAFSA and print it out. Give a copy to the people you live with. (IMHO they do not have your best interests in mind so they aren't really your parents. )

They are only required to supply copies of the tax forms if chosen to be verified. Is it possible they are still evading taxes ( not filing) and thats why they won't assist you?
Because you are under 25 it will be hard to get money for college through financial aid. I know this because I had to wait until 25 just to go. My mom refused to give her information as well but I didn't live with her and I was told I still was not considered independent without alot of signed statements. So my best advice would be try to get a scholarship apply for everyone you can find, eventually someone will give you something. It makes it really hard when parents can't and won't help to go to school.
wow. i havent seen a case like this before. if i were u i would relax and just enjoy life. I mean who needs college? (LOL)
your considerd dependant because you live with your parents, you have no kids, you are not married and your not 24 you only need one to be independant and then the government would help with funfing for your education.... dont know how it will help you but my boyfriend has the same problem, but since i have a kid and he lives with me he is considered independant because my child needs half of his support.
