Need a Career?

Question:
I’m a 33 year old male living in Scotland, I worked in IT for around 7 years supporting users, building systems and finding solutions to software requirements,

I got a job setting up a Document Management dept at a multinational company, I did everything they asked of me from sourcing hardware and software within budget, set up ISO procedures, meeting customers and securing large contracts, but when things started taking off I was pushed to the side in order for the MD's secretary to take the management role and reaped the rewards of large salary, car, laptop mobile etc.

I got really disillusioned with it all and eventually they asked me to resign.

To cut a long story short I took a manual job and done my back in pretty badly, so now I want to get back into IT but I don’t know where to start.

Any suggestions or is it too late.

Answer:
Hi Mr Flash,

I was in a similar situation to you and I know you must feel extremely let down by your firm but don't be bitter: just remember, working for a firm that doesn't recognise where the talent is, is WAY beneath you anyway. Find a place of work where your obvious talent is used to good effect. Just imagine how much better that firm would be doing if you HAD been given the position you deserved.

Focus on the skills you developed along the way and the experience you now have, both of which will keep you in good stead for the future. If you have no responsibility, you could come down to London - there's a big high-end IT skills shortage here at the moment. Check reed.co.uk and guardianjobs.co.uk - you'll see what I mean.

Alternatively, do what I did and go self-employed, it's a LOT more fun and you can work whenever you want. Set up a consultancy website, advertise locally and ask your friends, relatives and contacts. You can do all that for very little cash outlay. It will be slow at first but once the recommendations get going and word of mouth spreads, you'll have all the work you need. Do small jobs for free if you have trouble selling your services and ask the client for valuable feedback.

After six months of me going self-employed, I made a few grand a month and only worked 5 or 6 days each month, the rest of the time I spend abroad, on my hobbies or with my family.

Best of luck mate, in six months you'll be earning three times as much as the MD's secretary and own your own car and laptop - and you can claim the tax back!

Cheers
