NEVER! These may be people that the HR Director may one day have to discipline, investigate or even fire. The HR Director's supervisors may question his/her impartiality in such circumstances. Let's not even get into the problems that would arise if the drinking leads to sexual innuendos, comments, harassment or worse...
That would be considered "all in a day's work" for an HR director. However, he would have to make sure that no one from the company was excluded from the outing, for any reason.
Only okay with employees on the same level of management.
I think that is a good way to get to know the employees, maybe learn more about them personally and make the company a tighter knit group.
Just try to make sure no one gets ssssooooo intoxicated that they are not able to keep from embarrassing themselves...

I think it's acceptable as long as the human resource director does not get totally drunk or talk about co-workers or maybe just doesn't discuss work in general. They would have to keep it neutral and talk about things like the weather, art, golf, etc.
Not during working hours...no! But after work, I don't see a problem with that.

I don't think it is very professional to go out and drink with employees, but I am sure there is the occasional outing.

I work in an environment where alcohol is served at all of our functions, and I work at a University. I've never had a job that allowed drinking until I got here and I think it is weird. First of all I don't drink and I don't appreciate my co-workers getting tipsy and wasted at work, I think it is inappropriate. Drinking should be done on our own time, not companies time. So to answer your question if he or she is doing it outside of lunch and company hours, its okay. But if its done at work and it affects you then no.
