Almost being forced into another department at work.?

Question:
Ok, here's the deal. The department that I'm currently employed in has been rather slower than usual in the last three months. My manager doesn't like me not having enough to do (even though there are always projects going around) so they want me to train into another department at work.

A department that I really have no desire to enter. If there was an opening in the department I wouldn't even apply for it because I don't want it. However, I was told in a roundabout way that I have no choice because things are slow where I am right now and that the company needs to maximize their personnel. I should also note that this move would be a step down from the "ladder." I'm trying to decide if I should just look for a new job or tell them flat out that I refuse to be moved because it's my choice. Or would that be a death-sentence? Is this common for the workplace or is the management just not in touch with reality? Thanks!
As long as your pay doesn't go down, don't fuss.
Let your boss know that while you don't really want to do this move, you will do it to help the company out.
HOWEVER, when a position opens back up, they are to get you back into that position.
This has happened to me in a few companies that I've worked for, I would update my resume and see what is out there. Your present company has no choice if it is experiencing a slow term. They will look out for their bottom line first and you should always look after number 1, you.
From what you have said it sounds like if you don't take the transfer they will probably lay you off. There are a lot of companies that actually think they are doing a good thing instead of out right laying a person off they look for another position for the employee. There is a positive aspect to this also. You will now have a more varied job experience so this will look good if you ever decide to move on.

So if you like the company you should do the following. Let them know that you will transfer, but as soon as business picks up you would like to be transfered back to your current department.

But if you truly hate the department/company do the transfer but then also start to look around for a new job.

Good Luck
