Career changing from Human Resources to accounting?

Question:
I cuirrently have my bachelors in mgmt with a concentration in HR. I discover that I really don't like HR.

I was thinking about going back to school to receive my BACHELORS in accounting/finance. Because it will only be a semester or two of school.

My sister suggests that I go get my MASTERS in accounting.

What do you think? and why?

Answer:
Accounting can be a great career and right now accountants are in demand. I have a bachelors degree in managerial accounting, CPA and a master of accountancy. I think the CPA is the most important. In terms of what employers are looking for I would first - obtain the bachelors with a major in accounting... second - obtain the CPA, this will demonstrate your accounting proficiency whether you are in public or private accounting and third (a distant third) obtain your MBA or master of accountancy...

Today, in most states you need 150 hours to obtain the CPA... because of this, some universities are offering a 150 hour 5 year track that includes the master of accountancy. However, since you already have a BS degree... you will likely have your 150 hours once you complete the accounting courses. As such... the additional 30 to 60 credits that it would take to get your master in accountancy would have less value to you than to those who need it to get to 150 hours. Bottom line is, employers respect the CPA, to do the accounting courses and pursue the CPA.

Good luck!
