Odd Employee Out?
Question:
Answer:
That's a tough one. Even though it's not right, higher-ups tend to look at group dynamics. If you can manage to look not bothered and talk to them occasionally (nothing major) you will be fine. It sounds like a clique of women...nothing worse. I do work with a couple of ladies like this.willing to stab you in the back any minute. I have made sure I have made friends and acquaintances throughout the building and have gone out of my way to do my job well. I thought it went unnoticed, but at review time, it came up. My boss said she was always hearing what a pleasure I was to work with. So, do your thing, make contacts outside of the department, and consider transferring out. Eventually, they will be weeded out, but you don't need to be miserable every day until then. That kind of environment affects everything...and in the long run, your job performance. Good luck...I have been there.
Do your own thing. You cant make everyone like you so the best thing is to focus on your task. Its petty and something you definately do not want to get involved in. Tune them out, can you wear an iPod?
Look for another job first then move on
Let me guess, the people in the administrative staff probably got the job by referral. That's the problem. You got one bad seed, then he/she is going to invite all his/her friends in and you will end up being the 'odd' girl in the group.
Bad news for you is things are not going to change quickly. This type of people are very good at sucking up. So, you are just one person and they are a group.
Good news for you is you do have options. Transfer to another department is one. Of course, you can alway switch job. Are they smart? Can they do their job well? If yes, then you are very unlucky, so please consider the first two options. If they are dumb, then you do have the third option which is you wait. Sooner or later you will be discovered as useless and will be fired one after another. But this process could take years! So, you will have to be patient.
Good Luck!
The branch manager LIKES you. This is the most important person.
Other managers will criticize you and scare you. Their job is to drive you. (Hence the nickname "slavedriver"). Be really nice about it. If they say, "You should have been more organized." Respond, "How did you stay on top of things when you worked my position? I would love to learn from someone as experienced as you!" Some will have no answer because they realize that they are being too picky whereas others will give you some really good tips. This WILL make your performance appraisal.
As for the gossips.ignore them. They may look like they have credibility but they don't.
It sounds like you're rather miserable and perhaps you should consider looking for a new job elsewhere or is your company big enough you could transfer to a different department? I kinda prefer to be a 'loner' at my job, but then they don't go gossiping about me behind my back either as I do socialize the minimal amount, but don't do gossip.
You mentioned several managers but not what your specific supervisor says about your performance. Time for brief performance evaluation from your boss.
Try to keep things positive but share with your supervisor the negative, hostile environment being created by your co-workers. Going out of their way to make your feel uncomfortable is a choice on their part, and your boss needs to be clear how it is affecting the whole team. It's likely someone else has noticed and also feels uncomfortable.
Always be polite, be professional and be productive. If after meeting with your supervisor, you don't feel you have a future with this company, most definitely start a discreet job hunt. But be honest with yourself how your choices at work may have affected the outcome.
Good luck.
