Recently discharged from the NAVY and financially strapped! Interested in volunteering at the local VA Hospital working in the Human Resources Dept - hopefully to gain new skills and a different career path! What should be some of my objectives while Im there? My goal is to volunteer for a few months and then begin to apply for federal Human Resource Asst positions using the experience that I will have gained from volunteering at the VA. .. what should be some of my professional objectives while I am volunteering so that I can learn as much as possible in a short time period? ... thanks. why don't ypu get a job at a temp agency. you can get all kinds of different experience doing all kinds of aspects of HR work, choose your hours, etc by deciding which jobs you want to go to, and earn money at that. but i would concentrate on organizational psychology like issues (i.e. quality control, team building, etc.) and management.
I'm an HR coordinator. The first thing you would want to do is read the employee manual. Get familiar with policy and procedures. The thing that helped me alot was just asking alot of questions or reading alot of Human Resources books.
What you can start working and learning with the Compensation and benefits Section. Since this section under the Human Resource does not require a certain field of specialization, everyone can learn it little by little.
But this entails a lot of dealing with statutory benefits, processing and updating payments for such and working from various government institutions in accomplishing this task.
This may be routinary, but it will give you a good break in working with the HR Department.
