I worked 3 days 10 hour shifts and wont get paid overtime?

Question:
my dept at a distribution warehouse worked 3 days for 10 hours due to extra work load. after a day we were told we will not get any overtime paid. why we asked. we were told that from jan 2007 we were sent home some evenings 10 to 30 minutes earlier due to no work and that we got paid for that time not at work. all those minutes not working management now has accumulated and we owe the company time and now we wont be paid overtime for the 10 hours shifts. we normally work 11am to 7pm mon to friday. we signed a contract stating our work hours. we were not informed of this. because people are too scared to open their mouths they accepted this new information. not me. i am livid. we did not get anything in writing . neither did we have a choice to stay full time when work ran out. we also were not told that we are not going to get paid if we work overtime. i am sure if we had the choice to work full hours to get paid we will if told we will not get paid if we go home earlier. help?

Answer:
need to get 40 hrs 1st, then you get over-time
this depends on your local laws..

it is usuallly 40 hours per week that will entitle you to overtime, not more than 8 per day.
Contact your state's labor relations. There should be a website.
You need 40 hours in a week or 12 hours in 1 day to get overtime.
In your statement..you said "we signed a contract stating our work hours". Where is that contract and what were the hours stated? If you can't produce that contract.you are screwed. You might not think it's fair...but...they have the advantage at this point.
You don't mention the state you live in so the only thing I can say is call your State Department of Labor and relate the story. They will be able to tell you if anything fishy is going on.

Their number will be in the phone book.
