Answer:
Well, the bad news is that technology isn't really the limiting factor in data protection. But, I'm going to assume you have an idea that is recognizable as a significant step forward in some aspect of data protection. Approaching very large companies like Google and Yahoo directly will probably not work. The problem is that what you need is to talk to an expert, and since security experts are very expensive, companies like Yahoo and Google take enormous steps to protect them. Even at small companies like where I work, you would have to convince several people before interrupting the person you need.
What you need to do is talk to a small company who makes their living reselling ideas. If your idea is tied to data protection, a company that specializes in data protection. CheckPointe, and Beachhead Solutions come immediately to mind. Also, if you browse the list of known vulnerabilities, at nvd.nist.com, you can see who reported the vulnerability. Companies like Secunia, FRSIRT, and Security Focus make their living knowing about security trends at the cutting edge.
Having said all of that, I was thinking about whether I would put you in touch with security experts I know that could help you. I kept thinking, it is so incredibly unlikely this guy knows anything about what he's talking about, I would never waste their time. You'll have a hard time overcoming thinking like that. The security business is a meritocracy, and you can't just go charging in and talk to the guys at the top. Lots of 17 year old guys think they can solve the problems security guys make a living solving, but it is very rare that someone at your age has invested the time necessary to understand the complexity involved.
Good Luck
I hope that you explained your idea more clearly when you sent your email, because just listing security safeguard is not enough. You must explain who its gonna work all together.
But MD5 as been proven to be weak, because of the high number of collision. SHA-1 would be a bit better.
SSL is not used to encrypt data locally , but to encrypt data in transit. If fact HTTPS is HTTP over SSL and is already widely use over the NET.
Finally I dont know why you list WinRAR and WinZIP but I hope its not for encryption because theses tools doesn't provide very strong encryption.
You also have to thing that some e-mail gateway doesn't accept encrypted files since they cannot be scanned for virus.
I think that you need to put your idea cleary on paper, do a bit of research on the tools or safeguard youre proposing and finally explain how they will work together.
