Question:
I think changing jobs from one industry to another was a good idea but the bad idea is that I took a very low entry level position. yes I took a pay cut, and yes I'm back at the bottom of the totem pole (sp?!). that would be fine and I'm ok with "busy work" which is usually what entry level positions are but this is pretty much sitting around. I have no challenges what-so-ever! I am insanely OVER QUALIFIED for this position. now, there's a contact I have in the human resources dept that I could ask for assistance to see if I could be moved up faster then the 6 month probationary period allows.but is that going out of bounds? I'm not even sure it's allowable anyway. should I risk it?
Answer:
It's not going out of bounds. Starting to look even if you can't get the advancement is a good sign to most managers. Ask for practice interviews or informational interviews with department heads if they won't consider you for an advancement until 6 months. Then if a position comes open, you can be more of a shoe in. If you work for a small company, they will be more likely to bend the rules than a large company.
Good luck climbing the totem pole!
