Work Breakdown Structure?

Question:
Hello,

Was curious to know if anyone had a nice copy of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) from MS Project that was used to manage the testing and quality control of software development?

Thanks,
Scotty

Answer:
We use a very complex WBS for our software development (sorry, I cannot share the actual plan) but you need to determine if you are using an activity-based WBS or a deliverable-based WBS. Our company uses the deliverable-based WBS which specifies milestones for specific items (i.e. "Deliver component design architecture", "Develop system maintenance documentation"). These milestones are a higher-level than what I typically see within the activity-based WBS that often looks like "Design component API", "Design component data structure", "Compose interface documentation", "Complete screen-shots", etc.)

It may also depend on the type of development methodology that your firm is using (i.e. Rational, SDLC, etc.)

This may not answer your immediate question, but it may help you to determine which type of development/tracking mechanism you would chose to use for your project)

Good luck!
