Job Issues.?

Question:
I work as a part-time employee. I was given the usual handbook with company rules, policies, etc. Upon getting hired, the human resources person told me that I get all major holidays off. But then, my boss, seperate from the HR department says that I have to work on the 4th of July. For the sake of keeping my job, I agreed to work today for 3 hours to avoid having a fall out with my job and still get the 4th of july off, but today was supposed to be one of my other two regular days off. I'm still upset about being misled. My boss says she is going to talk to the HR person for "future reference" about this issue. What should I do? Stay out of it? Confront the HR person? I deserve both days off since I was mislead.

Answer:
If the handbook does not specify whether or not only full time employees are allowed holidays and not part time employees then yes I would go and take it up with HR. Who did the hiring HR or the boss? I would imagine that if anyone is more "aware" of company policy it would be the HR dept. The HR dept is there to handle disputes between employees so I would talk to them. If it ends up causing conflict between your boss and you you don't have to take it. You can file a complaint and have a mediator sit in and work it out. Just because you are the new kid on the block does not mean that your boss has the right to walk all over you and take advantage of you.
