Couldn't you offer your services to a local small company for free and get some real experience under you belt reather than making things up?
I am sure that there must be some that would like a computer system, but do not know where to start given the range of products on the market. Helping them specify their needs and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of what is currently available versus what it would cost to hire someone to do it?
They might also have thier own ideas...
How about writing a web site where you can enter your postcode and it finds the nearest brothel.
OK maybe not then.
How about: You are retained by a large company as IT Consultant and they want to update their computer system. You have to advise them as to type of server, how many computers, what specs, back up systems, software etc. For this you need to have detailed meetings with all who will use system to find out specific needs from which you can base your recommendations, costings, time taken to implement from start to finish combined with training on new system.
