Is Six Sigma worth mastering ? Should I do a Green Belt for $5500?

Question:
I am a Programmer/Webmaster that wants to learn Six Sigma and obtain a Masters in Marketing.

Answer:
First it depends on what you want the Green Belt certification to do for you. It will look good on a resume only to companies that use Six Sigma or know something about the power of the tools when applied correctly.

If you just want the knowledge for you own interest, there are some good books plus a lot of not-so-good books in the market.

If you are still in school and getting a degree in marketing, then apply to companies that use it. They will have their own customized version of green belt certification anyway.

Marketing is a wide open area with lots of potential applications. A good book related to marketing is: "Sales and Marketing the Six Sigma Way" by Michael Webb.

Check other providers including ASQ for green belt certification. If you learn on your own, ASQ should be less expensive. See: http://www.asq.org/certification/six-sig...

The ideal training is one that includes a real project so you get the skill and practice along with the book knowledge. So any certification program in the $5500 range should include a practice project.
