I'm going to interview someone who 3 months left me without a job, what to do?

Question:
I've been teaching English and Spanish for 7 years since I was 18. I had been working for 2 years at a company as a full time translator, but I still worked as a teacher part-time.
I wanted to go back to being a teacher full-time, and took a teacher test at Berlitz, and got accepted. They told me I needed to quit my job, and take a training, I did.
After 3 days of trainning this guy told me he just didn't want me at Berlitz. So I was left without a job. Fortunately, my old boss offer me to come back with a promotion working for human resources.
I've been working both in HR and translating, but I now I'm looking for my replacement.
I was surprised to get an application from the very same guy who didn't want me at Berlitz. I discreetly found out he wants my old translator job because Berlitz doesn't offer insurance for his family.

He has no idea he's applying for my old job, and he doesn't know I'm going to interview him, or that I'd be his boss.

What to do?

Answer:
You have a really nice boss, i must say :]

And when you see that guy, just be sooo nice to him that he feels bad about what he did to you. Or to show him that he did you a favor because you got a promotion out of it.Trust me, he will be way more embarrassed than you.
how about starting off on a clean slate. forget the past. leave it up to him to decide. just be a good person.
Well you can't use your position to retaliate against him. You have to interview him like anyone else. If you choose not to accept him for the job, you'd better have valid reasons to back yourself up or else he could file a lawsuit.
be the better person and leave everything behind
:]]
Interview that guy and see the look on his face when he realizes he will be working for you! That will be sweet revenge all without you having to do a thing. I also think that you should give him a fair shot at the job. But if you do hire him, take some of the pranks Jim pulls from the show "The Office" and enter them into your own repertoire.
Don't recommend him. Someone that took the trouble to harm you for no reason in another job is likely to harm others should he get the chance to take your position.

Plus, "jerk" isn't on the list of federally-protected categories for hiring discrimination.
I'd go ahead and interview him and have the camera ready for the look on his face when he realizes that it's you!
I have to be honest and say that I would not give him the job. After he gave you that lame reason as to why he couldn't honor his offer before! And I'm sure the "right" thing to say would be "Interview him, and if he is qualified then hire him!" But let's be honest, he left you high and dry without a thought!
I would do him the same way, and anybody who says different is fooling themselves! Just being honest!
Now this is an interesting situation...I can think of all kinds of evil things that I would like to grill this guy on (the one who told you he didn't want you there). I would act as if I had never met him before, since you don't want to find yourself getting in trouble for seeming biased. Ask him questions about what he did at his old job, and ask him how he got along with subordinates and peers. Based on his answers, you can probably find out why he treated you the way he did, and figure out if he is telling the truth. It might even make him squirm a little and regret telling you that Berlitz didn't want you.
If you think you can handle it... maybe you can actually hire him. It'll be good karma for you.. and good health for your conscience..

Pay it forward. :)
I think deep down inside you know exactly what to do. Is he qualified, can you continue working with him without animosity? Would you have done the same thing. Do a little soul searching. the right decision will come to you.
If you don't think that he had a good reason to let you go, then is that the type of character you want to work for your company?
This is happening as a lesson to him, not to test you. He needs to learn that you can't leave people in difficult situations and then expect that he gets rewarded regardless. Be his teacher, not his boss.
Be a gentleman & do the interview as if you had never met him. I would ask him any relevant questions pertaining to the job then ask him if he has anything he'd like to ask you!
It's going to be fun. You already know he's a little flaky but try not to make him squirm. Health insurance can make a person desperate.
This is not a suggestion but if I were in your shoes I would look at it from a Christian perspective. See how he reacts to it. He might apologise to you but that does not mean you should take him. Unless there is a compelling reason to do so.

Peace and blessings!
Is this the only applicant, or are the candidates selected by someone else? There is an old saying: "The only certainty when you open a can of worms, is that you will need a larger can for the worms. The combination of his animosity and your seniority would only convert his remote job dissatisfaction to local resentment. Why invite trouble?

If you must interview, ask how this demotion would be advantageous to hiring someone who would consider it more of a challenge. Hiring another person with less experience for less money allows growth potential for both parties. While over qualification is often a disqualification, it seems unlikely this person could be the best fit for this position. Good Luck.
