Human Resources Career?

Question:
I would like to know a little more about what someone can expect once one gets to working in human resources. Just from a little looking online, it seems that entry level positions start at about $35K and directors of HR make around $100-$110K. Can anyone tell me a little more about this. Is the in-between pay just based on experience? Are there any, and if so, what are the positions in-between entry and director and what kind of pay can be expected for these positions. Also how long does it take to work your way up in this career? Is this something that I could work my way up to director within 10-12 years or will I be pushing retirement by the time I break 6 figures?

Also, is this a "9-5" job, where I will also have a family life or is this more like 12-14 hour days that when they hire you, they tell you its 9-5? Is it common to have weekends and holidays off?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:
I know the big dogs in HR make that much expecialy in a big company. You have to REALY know your stuff! I am an office manger (small office) very small! And iam in the low scale of income.BUT i don't think its time that you have to worry about its if you are a pro at the job meaning catching mistakes BEFORE they happen, damage control, organazation, comp. skills, attention to detail is a must think about it its oone of those jobs thats either lots a $ or no $...good luck! oh ya the hours are great! But the big $ makers usaly are the ones who stay late come in early and work weekends :(
