Employer leaves messages in response to your applying to a job or do they forget you and move on?
Question:
Often I'm out and rarely home enough to sit by the phone waiting for a call. So do employers these days bother to leave messages or do they forget me/try again once more and move on to the next candidate on their list?
Especially interested in hearing from those who work in Human Resources. What do you do?
Answer:
If you've just applied and don't get a call, that generally means that you're not going to be asked to interview. Typically, employers get so many applications and/or resumes, there's no way they would have time to call all those who they're not interviewing. However, feel free to call them back after about a week to inquire about the status of your application, or where they are in the hiring process. You can also ask if they have an idea of when they'll be calling candidates for interviews. This will put your mind at rest, and will show them you're interested in the job. Just don't turn into a pest by calling too often - that can often move a potential candidate from the "maybe" list to the "pass" list.
I would call ONCE and leave a message. If no response in a reasonable time, NEXT!
My boss actually called me 4 times and then even told me I could bring my child in with me for the interview. I explained I was new to the city and didn't have childcare. I got the job and LOVE It. They love me too :) Least they say they do! lol
I used to work in HR a few years ago. I always left messages and waited a reasonable amount of time (maybe 2 days) to see if I would get a response.
I leave one message and do not call again. If I liked the application enough to call, I'm not going to forget about the person just because they weren't home to answer the phone at the exact time I called. And I certainly don't have time to try every hour or two. So I leave the message and if you want a job, you will call me back.
