Stuck between 2 bosses. Advice?

Question:
One boss wants me to take on a small project management. The other does not -he has someone else in mind to bring in for the position. There are currently only the 3 of us in the company. They have equal power. Historically SIX people have sat at my desk in the past 12 months...when there was only one of the two bosses. They are making it my decision whether or not I do the project. I've always wanted to do project management; I'm very concerned that this is a toxic environment under which to proceed with that dream. No matter what I choose I'm going to tick one of them off...is there a polite way to decline to make this decision myself?

Answer:
The way I would approach the issue is to meet with them both at the same time and let them know you are willing to do whatever is needed to help out, but you need them to make a decision as to what is expected/needed from you. Sounds like those two have the problem with each other and not with you.
Do both and collect 2 paychecks.
If there are only 3 people, you and two bosses, the place is already messed up, unless they are co-owners. To have more bosses than employees is a joke.

The decision should not be yours, and you should have them decide who is the most important person in the company. THAT person's will should be followed, and if they are 50-50, then they need to figure things out themselves, and you wait.
You are walking on egg shells and no one can please two bosses,,,Maybe you should look for a position elsewhere,,,,As you have an impossible problem,,,,,,good luck.
I think you should have a meeting with your two bosses. Explain to them that you are being confused because you have to follow two different orders. Tell them that they should discuss the issue first before bring it to you.
First off, if 6 people have sat at your desk in the last 12 months, you are definetely in for a demotion out the door some time soon!

And, I am betting that the boss that doesnt want you in the position is responsible for ALL those people leaving, or being fired...

So, I would start to please the "hard boss" and see what his interests are, (butter up job), and share them, or, if you cant, then a new position maybe opening up at a different location and it wont be with in the business you are currently in...

Your playing with dynomite, and its a boss with a short fuse that holds the match! I wouldnt take that job on a bet!

I wish you well..

I agree with the other 2 people that suggested you meet with both of them. You are in a delicate position and if you wish to remain at that company, (not sure why!) then you need to be tactful about getting them to make a decision as to what you should do. Good Luck!
