Dell dimension B110 ethernet not working- to buy NIC card or not?
Question:
Should I waste money to get a new NIC card for the desktop? What brand would work well with my desktop computer? Would there be incompatibilities btw the new card and the onboard ethernet, with my experience with MS Win's shoddy software problems? Thank you. I need this information ASAP. I tried going online with Linux to test the problem, it's the same eth0 problem: can't detect eth0, so I know it's nothing to do with the computer. It's a relief to know I don't have to buy a new computer.
Answer:
You can buy an Ethernet card for a few bucks.
I would uninstall your onboard card first.
Install the drivers only for the new card.
Shut down and insert the card in a available PCI slot.
Restart and let Windows find the drivers.
If you could not connect with Linux - it is obviously not the winsock file.
go with any brand wont matter you can get them so cheap anyway for wired
If you recently removed any spyware , malware, virus or trojans from your system. It is possible that the removal damaged the winsock. The windows winsock is what allows you to get on the internet.
You didn't say what OS you were using, so I will assume Windows XP. Download the WinsockXP Fix from the laptop, stick it on a floppy disk or to a RW-CD and run it on the desktop.

If you are running windows vista, re post your question because there is a different set of instructions for Vista machines.
