How will the human population max out?

Within our lifetimes, the human population will probably get as high as Earth's resources can support. What will happen at that point? Will the population continue to go up and therefore there will be mass starvations? Should be expect worldwide food rationing? Do you think people will face mandatory birth control like China does now? How SHOULD we handle it?

Answer:
All of the above

Either humans will kill themselves off, or we're going to perfect spaceship technology to the point we can colonize other celestial bodies. The way things are running internationally, I'm betting on thermonuclear overkill or some horrific supervirus unleashed on humanity..

Well, if I remember right, scientist are working on engineering food, so maybe it could be used to feed the masses.

I could very well be wrong, but who knows.

I think that, just before we use up all our oil and destroy all our forest and ocean resources or kill each other in nuclear war, god will see our plight and kindly, over coffee, request that one of his favorite viruses mutate a bit. This virus will cause a massive airborne-disease outbreak and kill off most everyone in the world.

God would think it was fun to watch, so s/he would let the survivors piddle around until they died off, too. Then the plants and animals of the earth would be happy and go about repairing the ruin we have made.
