How to get a manager to stop calling you by a "nickname"?
Question:
We've recently moved to another location. The manager started becoming distant (in part because where I am located and his office aren't close, he was passed up over a promotion plus he has had personal issues outside of the job recently) towards us. He still calls me by the nickname but because we are in a new location and things seem different, I feel uncomfortable with it.
I want to confront him with this saying that I just want to be called my name (dealing with human resources in this case is OUT of the question since I don't want to get the guy in trouble) but I am not sure how to go about this without hurting a feeling. He is a good guy, unlike some managers who are bleeps.
So, how should I go about this?
Answer:
Tell him it was fun, but now down to being yourself..
How about "Hey, use my real name now, ok?" Gees, is it that hard to talk to him about it? "My nickname makes me uncomfortable, it's (jack, joe, mary,,,whatever it is)."
When he calls you your nickname from a distance, don't answer to him until he uses your real name.
Gosh, tell him, just like you told us!
tell him you dont like it and add him a funny nick name to this request something not to offensive and dont smile. tell him my name is ----- as your name is ====
Be low key and friendly about it, but be clear that you don't want to hear that name again and that you will not respond to that name.
I'm sure if you just approach him directly, tell him honestly why (because of professionalism) and ask him to stop he will. If he slips once and a while I'd let it slide. I'm sure he won't have any heartburn with it...why would he, I'd much rather a person talk to me directly when they have an issue with me than going behind my back or gossiping about it.
tell him " hi your name is joe and my name is tony " or call him by his last name mr brown. he may get the message.
if it makes the guy happy, let him call you Mr. Penut for all it matters.
