Answer:
Have you gone though PM training or certification? If you don't have a lot of PM experience, I suggest looking into getting your Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. It will look great on your resume. Go to http://www.pmi.org/info/pdc_pmp.asp... for more info.
Read 'Project Management' by Henry Mantel and always listen to your subordinates.
always develop a plan, stay focused, remain flexible at all times and never lose sight of your vision because of outside sources.
Know strengths and weaknesses of all parts involved, then work with them. this can be done thru testing and analysis.
I work directly with project managers for the State of California, local governments, and private consultants in Transportation Engineering. These projects are mostly 5 million plus and our project managers have about 20 projects concurrently.
Important qualities for Project Managers (PM's) are being well organized (very important to keeping a good schedule), which ultimately impacts funds, time truly is money in the realm of PM's. I would recommend either doing what I'm doing in working side by side with a PM, as most are very helpful to delegate their work, which frees up their time, and you learn as you go. Another very important quality of a PM is being professional and well prepared at meetings, if you are not well prepared people will put you on the spot, and you will regret what you have said. Learn how to work with people and delegate work, truly a PM is a goto guy, a supervisor, and an organizer!
Working as an assistant project manager would be a good place to start.
You can study for a PM certification, such as the PMP certification from PMI.
You can take a variety of online PM courses.
You can attend a variety of in-person courses at colleges and universities.
I recommend reading Project Management for Dummies for novice project managers.
Take as many people-skills courses as you can e.g. meeting facilitation, conflict-resolution etc.
