Interested in a career in Graphic Designing. Go for a degree or take short courses to test the waters first?
Question:
Answer:
Well, I'm a graphic designer and I'm completely open to sharing knowledge and giving advice to those interested in the field. If you want to know how the field is like for an average day you can e-mail me separately. Otherwise, I would say if you know that you are one of those people who may jump around in different fields that interest you I'd go the short less expensive route to see if it really even keeps your interest. NOW.IF you want an in-depth feel for it or find out you really want to pursue it...you're going to probably need a bachelor's. Doesn't mean you can't make it with an associate's – besides if you get a job that gives you real world experience you could really go quite far. But, the thing with graphic design is it continually changes.especially the software. Blink and I swear there will be a new Adobe Illustrator version out.
The field can be...and is.rewarding. There's pros and cons to everything out there. If you're interested I can definitely fill you in.
Good luck!
I would recommend the degree. On a superficial level, it will look better on a resume. On a practical level, you will get a better education in a program geared towards trainign you for that type of job. The continuing ed type software course will just give you a taste; they are not anywhere near as comprehensive as an actual degree.
It really depends on you. Many famous graphic designers were self taught. But it can be hard to break into the field.
Generally, I’d suggest that you get a degree (and then get a few more!). Getting a degree and sharing ideas and criticism with other passionate people is priceless for your development as a creative professional.
But if you are the type of person who really gets excited about something, get obsessed, and reads and practices like crazy, you might be able to break in on your own. Start making things, get internships and on-the-job training. There are certainly enough resources out there, but you have to do it on your own you have to be very driven.
if you feel passionaltly about graphic design go for the degree, it is a feild no one should enter unless you are reallllllllly into it,
if you find yourself browsing press ads, monitoring billboards and unipoles alond your way home, fixing some designs with your head, comming up with new slogans for a printed ad,smiling when you think as add is pretty well designed, go for a degree.
if you intrested in GD among other things then test the waters and see if you like it.
