What's up with my sound? Music Producers and software help!?

Question:
I just bought a M-audio Fast Track that allows you to plug your guitar or microphone into a computer or laptop. I bought a $70 microphone with it. I went to my house and tested the sound out. I was disappointed. It sounds like when I sing or rap or anything there is too much backround noise and I can hear the tinyest breath from myself. Plus it also sounds like I'm from a radio station, like when I play a song or a beat it doesn't sound like I'm singing with the song, sounds like I'm at a concert. Anyways, is it the M-audio Fast Track or My microphone.
Please help, thanks

Answer:
Depends on what microphone you are using. Sounds like you bought yourself a Condensor. It will be very sensitive, and its recommended use is for recording sessions and not for live singing. Try reducing the gain control on your sound card if it has one. If not, try using a dynamic microphone, something like a Shure SM 58.

If can be a faulty cable / microphone as well. Try using different microhpones, cables, and try and keep the gain control at 2 O clock or less. never more than 3 o clock !
