Is consistent temp-work feasible?

Question:
Hi,
I would like everyone's opinion on something. I am looking to move out to Los Angeles or New York City, however, I do NOT want to get locked into another 9-5 position. I plan on pursuing a career in writing, and doing some investment real estate to subsidize my income.

I have a Bachelor's degree and I have around 1 1/2 - 2 years of experience in Human Resources.

So here's the question: Do you all think that the staffing agencies would have enough consistent work for me to be able to take care of myself until my writing career pays off. I do like to travel alot so I would be looking for assignments lasting from 1 day to no more than probably 2 months.

Please advise. Thanks!

Answer:
It is hard to tell what they have, but there is a downsize to temping. It isn't all the time they have work for me and I got work experience, so you can talk to your recruiter what assignments they have & what you don't want and the staffing manager if it is a big one like Robert Half International won't send you on those. They come in at random, so you can concentrate on your writing. Some can be longer then 2 months, so it depends.
Another option is to find a position on a contract basis, 6 months or so, or a maternity leave position. That way you are not committing yourself to a long term position.

Often these positions can be found in the newspaper/or on-line in addition to using the services of a the temp agency. Temp agencies charge the employer more than you will be receiving.

If you can manage to find these jobs on your own, you may be able to negotiate your salary as well as terms of your employment. You will probably not be entitled to any company benefits.

Good luck.
