Memorization vs. Dynamic Thinking: Which do you think is more important?

Question:
Obviously you require some form of memorization to gain intelligence and learn things, but in some disciplines, the basis for success is purely dependent on how well you memorize things.

A lot of disciplines do not place emphasis on giving students more experience with dynamic or on-the-spot thinking and are simply testing their ability to regurgitate facts or somebody else's answers.

Is this such a good thing that certain disciplines are subjecting students to become purely walking encyclopedias? I mean, computers and software are really good at storing information and looking it up (much faster and less error prone than people), so really why is there still a focus on people having to purely memorize things or even professions that revolve around this for that matter?

I don't want to bias your thinking in coming up with answers so I won't mention any professions/disciplines in particular, but you can probably name some off the top of your head.

Answer:
Memorisation may not be essential considering the current technology available, nevertheless there are professions that would require stuff to be memorised eg pilots, safety procedures and those involved in espionage. there is a definite need to develop thinking skills in kids. currently kids are expected to be computers.fertility of the brain is not being exploited. many great inventions and successes in military operations have been achieved by dynamic thought that resulted in innovative and audacious plans. Rommel was one example of extremely dynamic thinking. fluid situations call fot dynamic thought and non adherence to stereotype or memorised drills. the earlier we realise the benefits, the better it shall be.
Definitely we need both. For thinking you need to have memorization too.
Dynamic Thinking

Facts can always be obtained if u THINK of a way

but nothing can be produced from MEMORIZED facts, unless there is some thinking.

Of course, memorization allows for subjects to be known "by heart," which enhances the dynamic thinking process.
