The project dissertation

The standard form of the the project dissertation is an organisational research project in which a student undertakes a case study of a particular organisation. However, this is by no means the only form for the dissertation project, and research projects using a range of different procedures (perhaps also involving groups of students) are allowable. It is also possible to undertake a library-based project. Students work exclusively on the project from June to mid-September. Placed in the last third of the programme, it acts as an integrative exercise, enabling programme members to focus their analytic and research skills on a particular issue or series of issues in an organisation.

As far as possible projects are arranged to accommodate the particular interests of students. Projects involving fieldwork may require full-time residence away from Lancaster for up to three months, with students returning to Lancaster late August when the projects are written up. The dissertation itself is submitted in the middle of September.

Students are invited to begin consideration of their dissertation as early as possible on the course. They are expected to work out their own proposals, including their own field projects (if this is the direction in which they choose to develop their work). Support will be given in the form of exercises relevant to research, a preparatory intensive course in research methods and an academic supervisor based in the Department and assigned according to are of research interest.

Projects undertaken by MA students on the MA in HR and Knowledge Management have covered a wide range of topics, such as:

* A study of learning and knowledge management initiatives in Statoil
* Philosophising human resource management: Uncovering the issues of the contemporary self
* Researching on the existence of contradictions and understanding their nature in every day human resource management practice
* Performance-related pay: rhetorics and realities - a case study of PRP in a Chinese SOE
* Organisational culture: a critical insight into its effects on the workforce
* The government of the soul and the implications of society and culture in the meaning of working and life
* How 'alien' is the notion of human resource management in the national health service?
* Performance appraisal and the commodification of labour in the contemporary capitalist society
* The relationship between perceived human resource management (HRM)
practices and individual performance on the universalistic proposition
* Emotional labour: high school teachers in Taiwan
