Risk management in computer based projects?

Question:
I am doing a literature review on why risk management is becoming increasingly important in computer based projects. I've read several different books but I am looking for various other peoples opinion on this as well. Any feedback welcome.

Answer:
Hi there. I have worked in the computer industry for over 20 years and I can tell you that risk management has ALWAYS been important - it is just that it gets ignored as an unwanted overhead. Your books will be telling you that we are getting smarter at it, but the books are wrong. The basic problem is identifying what is a risk in the first place, which comes back to what management will accept. No science in that, sadly! How often recently have I seen test scripts that follow the programming, instead of the specification? And written to mirror that writing, not to challenge it?
Because modern techniques of automatic code generation make creating code so quick, old disciplines are deemed not necessary. But guess what? Get the spec wrong and it doesn't matter how quickly you code, you will have to do it all over again, as the generated code is almost impossible to debug.
Good luck, Steve.
Please do your home work elsewhere..
Read the PRINCE 2 manual it has a large section on risk analysis in all projects. Does not have to be specific to computer based projects.
