My 8x DVD drive is reading/writing at 1x in Win XP. Any solutions?
Question:
Problem: Initially worked at 8x, now at 1x; no changes in software; purchased/installed 10 February. Drive test reports functioning at 1x.
Question: Could this be a software issue? Has anyone else experienced something similar?
Answer:
Use Device Manager to view the properties of the IDE channel to which the drive is connected, the Advanced Settings tab may show that the current transfer mode for the drive is "PIO Mode." To fix you can uninstall the IDE controller and it will reinstall automatically when you reboot. It will change the drive letter to a different letter, but that can be changed in Disk Management. It should be Ultra DMA 2 and it will change to PIO Mode if the burner makes six errors.
sounds like either a firmware issue or somehow dma got turned off.
I'd check the dma settings first since that sounds most likely if you had 8x to begin with.then i'd check for a firmware update just to keep it current.
I wouldn't rule out software completely...depending on what you install it's possible some system files get replaced with poorly written code...that could also lead to a dma problem
