When you apply for a job, and Human Resources make a copy of your SS card, what exactly comes out?

Question:
I was just wondering what exactly comes out...as in past jobs, criminal history, school..any help would be superb.

Answer:
It's for tax identification purposes for the IRS. It can also be used with a drivers license to satisfy the I-9 form, which proves you can legally work in the United States. Normally, on a criminal background check they use your Date of Birth and drivers license to identify you as the person with or without a record, not your social security number
They make a copy so that you can be legally employed. But that means that someone else has your social security number.
They need your social security card as proof of citizenship, along with a photo id. I think they can use your ssn to check for a criminal history, etc... but I am not sure..
Not to scare you but alot of companies are now checking not only your employment record and eligability, but they are also checking you credit report. This is very true, as I have worked for a nameless company that did that exact thing. Try searching for more info.
It depends on the job. Criminal record checks are pretty standard. Credit checks may be done in positions of financial responsibility/security. If a credit check is run, you will have to give them your permission.
If you put educational information on your application/resume, they may call to verify it.
