Question:
I currently work in government doing IT work (sys admin and business analysis) and will be finishing up my MBA this June 2006. I got an offer with a large accounting/advisory firm in its IT audit/strategy group. The pay is comparable so my move is pretty much lateral. I have a good relationship with my current boss but, at times, there is literally nothing going on. My boss wants me to stay and he mentioned he could move me up to the next level within two years (apparently, promotions and related processes are slow in government). Also, there is no stress in government but in the private sector, especially in an accounting firm, the hours could be long and stressful. Not sure what to do.
Answer:
I have worked in position working with the DOD however not directly in a GS postition. I assume from your question you are fairly young and you haven't been there long. However here is something to take into account. If you are a GS employee and you put 20 years in you get a government retirement. I'm pretty sure it is based off of your highest GS level(not sure on this). So if you are GS and you think you can make it until 20 years without sliting your wrist I would stay.
