I want to start a certification program for software management professionals. How can I start that?

Question:
Are there any legal consideratons I need to be aware of or can I develop a test and program and certify people right away?
First, you have to be certified. Why would I attend one of your classes or sign up for online if you had no initials after your name? You know which ones I mean.

Well established companies are already doing this:

You have to ask yourself what will you offer that they do not?

Good luck. This is a crowded field.
You probably already realize, the certification game is largely a marketing-driven racket. Mainly all you need is an impressive sounding name for your organization, and some direct mail to get people to attend.

Some states require you to be licensed (pay a tax and fill out forms) if you're going to be "certifying" people. Check w your state board of education or dept of education website to see if you fall under the same rules as tech schools and beauty schools.

A good resource on this topic is Dan Kennedy, he has a coaching and consulting program that covers this topic in depth. www.dankennedy.com
